Artist Summary and Journey

What is your primary genre of music?

Gospel

Which instruments do you primarily play or what is your role in music production?

I play Keyboards/Piano and I am a producer

Where did you grow up, and who were your early musical influences?

I grew up in Dayveton and my journey in music started with me singing in the church and school choir. I eventually became interested in the keyboard after being encouraged to learn by my pastor. Growing up in the church, my musical influences where mainly from the gospel genre. I looked up to producers such as Kevin Bond, Arron Lindsey and Siyanqoba Mthethwa just to name a few. Through listening to them and practicing, it helped shape me into the keyboard/piano player and producer I am today.

What have been the major turning points and milestones in your career?

In the year 2016 I had the honor to be called in to be of the Joyous Celebration 20 tour around the country, playing organs. This was a major turning point in my career, as it later materialized into me being appointed to direct and produce volume 22 until 24. It opened me up to opportunities that have helped mold me into the world class musician I am today.

Why do you choose to represent Roland as a brand?

Roland was one of the first brands of keyboards I got introduced to. It was in sync with the popular South African church style “itende”. Being exposed to this brand in church, lead me to exploring and playing around with other sounds on the keyboard. This is how my love for auxiliary keys (second keys) was birthed. The reason I choose to represent Roland, is because it has played a big role in my musical journey. It’s innovation and constant move with the times is another reason why I stand by it

Making Music in South Africa

From your perspective, how is South African music influencing the audiences on the African continent and Internationally.

South African producers and artists are innovative in their sound. We see this in the many recent records internationally that have adopted our sounds, such as Amapiano and Afro house. The evidence is also clear on social media where we see audiences from all over the world doing South African dance challenges to our music. This show how big of an influence our music is globally.

How has this affected your career?

Having the ability to adjust and stretch myself as the times move, has allowed me to challenge myself and grow my signature sound. The music space is constantly growing, which l pushes me to grow and learn more and more as I go.

Which is your preferred backline company to with in South Africa?

KCS, KJB and Sound Headquarters

Equipment and Dream Rig

Roland keyboards are easy to manoeuvre. The fact that you can layer 8-16 sounds at the same time and able to isolate one sound when tweaking is out of this world. I don’t have to carry sound card to gigs anymore because of the built-in sound card in the keyboard. You can’t fake the feeling of home, ROLAND IS HOME!.
