Artist Summary and Journey

What is your primary genre of music?

Gospel

Which instruments do you primarily play or what is your role in music production?

Guitar/Bass. I produce and co-produce if necessary.

Where did you grow up, and who were your early musical influences?

I grew up in Kuils River so I was influenced by a lot of gospel, but it was not my first exposure to music. I was exposed to blues and Latin-American rock, which was played by the likes of Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana who are my role models. Everything else genre wise came after them. I started listening to contemporary jazz when I was 15, so the playlists comprised of songs from artists like Lee Ritenour, George Benson and Norman Brown. The local influences were there as well, which included Jimmy Dludlu, Ernie Smith and Jonathan Butler. I drew some inspiration from other local bands that I listened to and played with, which helped me shape my identity and my playing style music wise. When it comes to recording, I learnt everything at Kingdom Generation Studios because it was my first hub, and it taught me a lot of the things I still use today when recording.

What have been the major turning points and milestones in your career?

My turning point locally was when I got to perform and record with Jonathan Rubain in 2017. This was the breakout phase and things started to pick up from here. My first international concert was with Todd Dulaney in 2018 at the Every Nation Church in N1. It was the first international album I got to record on, which also got a Stellar Award nomination.

Why do you choose to represent Roland as a brand?

I love the Roland brand because they can stand the test of time, other than the fact that they are cutting edge with the technology they produce.

Making Music in South Africa

From your perspective, how is South African music influencing the audiences on the African continent and Internationally.

South Africa is a hub for all types of music, and not can we recreate, but we can create something special at any time with all our influences and experiences. Music is a universal language, and with standard we are multilingual.

How has this affected your career?

The diversity in music has really helped me step up my musical approach because one has to be versatile when playing live and recording. You can operate well inside a box if you’ve gotten to know the world outside of it.

Which is your preferred backline company to with in South Africa?

Eastern Acoustics

Equipment and Dream Rig

What are the key components of your current setup (instruments, amplifiers, pedals, etc.)?

At the moment, my key setup is my pedal because most of what I need comes from there, but the most important tool for me, in my opinion, is the amplifier. You have a good amplifier, you’ll most likely have a good sound.

What would your ultimate setup or dream rig include)?

A good tube amp or something that has good tube emulation, like the Nexto e – but with a Celestion Greenback as the main speaker. It needs to be heard to experienced.
